The original Chevrolet Express debuted way back in 1965, At the time, vans came in only one size--gargantuan--and the idea of parking a van inside a residential garage hadn't been taken seriously yet. The van world changed irrevocably with the arrival of the Dodge Caravan/Plymouth Voyager in 1983, and as minivans proliferated Van Hire, full-size vans fell into disfavor with everyone except commercial customers. Aside from the Express van Hire and its corporate twin, the GMC Savana, there are only two other maxivans left on the market--the aging Ford Econoline and the sprightlier Mercedes-Benz-built Dodge Sprinter Van Hire.
In 1995, the Express was the beneficiary of a stem-to-stern overhaul--its first in three decades. Two years ago, it was freshened substantially to upgrade its mechanical components and bring its styling in line with the rest of the Chevy corporate family. The Express is sold in a dizzying array of iterations, several of them earmarked for fleets, commercial use, and van conversion companies. Passenger van Hire models come in half-ton (1500 Series), three-quarter-ton (2500 Series), and one-ton (3500 Series) varieties. The 2500 and 3500 can be configured with an extended wheelbase, and the 1500 is available with all-wheel drive (known as the H-Series, as opposed to the standard rear-wheel-drive G-Series). As if those aren't enough choices, a base V-6 and four V-8s are available Van Hire.The high driving van Hire position makes for great visibility. And unlike cargo vans, visibility stays good to the side and to the rear. Also helping out are the towing mirrors ($80 option), which include a pair of flat powered mirrors and a pair of small convex non-powered mirrors; the convex mirrors give me a quick look at my blind spots. Once the engine rumbles to life, accelerating is a touchy affair. Just a touch of the gas pedal sends the van jerking forward, and a moderate press can send the tires chirping. This example happens to be equipped with the 5.4-liter V8 engine, an $800 option over the standard 4.6-liter V8. The transmission is a 4-speed automatic, with standard PRND2L positions and a separate button for turning of f the overdrive. It shifts pretty smoothly, for now. Brakes are sof t, spongy, and take a lot of effort. At least, all four brakes are discs with ABS, but it seems that under normal driving conditions, I will never be triggering ABS. Further driving aids, such as traction and stability controls, are not available at the E-150 level. A warning label on the visor reminds me that this is a high vehicle that can easily tip over. But given that, it's relatively stable on city streets and freeways. I've driven at 75 MPH without a problem (the recommended break-in speed is 70 MPH for the first 1,000 miles). The steering is direct, with no free play, a huge improvement over my father's other Econoline; in the past, Econolines have always had a reputation for never staying in a straight line. Headlights and wipers work decently, but are not outstanding. Fuel economy is rated at 13 MPG city and 17 highway. The numbers are comparable to those of a larger SUV such as the Expedition, though the Econoline is much more cavernous than the Expedition. I've actually clocked about 14-15 MPG. Nevertheless, it's not easy driving this van with fuel prices well over $3 per gallon which make this van Hire a great gas saver.
